The Global Philadelphia Association (GPA) is a nonprofit that promotes Philadelphia as a World Heritage City, fostering connections among international organizations and supporting work in sustainable development, journalism, education, and more. Each December, GPA holds their annual “Globy Awards” ceremony, honoring influential Philadelphians whose accomplishments have contributed to the local community and its international reputation.
We designed the Globy Awards program book as both an attendee’s guide to the event, and as a keepsake honoring the celebration. The design challenge was to work with both GPA’s and the Globy Awards’ existing branding and promotional materials, navy and orange color palette, and booklet printing specifications.
For the cover, we used a close-up photo of the crystal, globe-shaped award, recolored in shades of navy blue. The event title was overlaid in a sophisticated script, to differentiate it from the unadorned sans-serif event and organization logos. For consistency, we incorporated the colorblocked time and date details that had been created by another designer for preceding event publicity. These colorblocks were continued throughout the booklet, and especially prominent in the program’s central spread, a listing of awardees, their brief biographies, and photos. We repurposed the Globy Awards’ logo’s dynamic, orbital lines by using them to frame the awardees’ photos. Their award categories and names were positioned along these lines.
Although the awardees, schedule, and logistics will change each year, it is our hope that this program booklet might provide design direction and branded assets that are useful going forward.
